ASTM E2768 testing commissioned by Western Wood Preservers Institute and conducted at an accredited ICC-ES lab proved wood products treated surface-applied are unreliable at best in their ability to achieve the performance test results required by fire safety codes. In 19 of 21 tests on such products, the the flame front went beyond the 10.5 foot mark prior to the end of the test’s 30-minute duration. By contrast, in all 10 tests of pressure treated fire-retardant-treated wood, the flame front did not reach the 10.5 foot mark during the tests’ 30-minute duration.
While achieving the specified results in this test does not by itself qualify a product as code-compliant, failure to achieve those results is cause for immediate disqualification.
